Balloon payments on car finance: are they worth it?
Figures for the 2026/27 tax year. Prime rate checked 1 October 2026; tax tables and fees checked 30 September 2026. By AfroTech.
A balloon payment lowers your monthly car instalment by pushing part of the loan to the very end. It can make a car feel affordable, but it almost always makes it more expensive. Here's how much.
The example
A R 400 000 car with a R 40 000 deposit, financed over 72 months at 11,75% (prime + 1%, a common rate for a buyer with a good credit record).
| Balloon | Monthly instalment | Owed at the end | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | R 7 084 | R 0 | R 143 858 |
| 10% | R 6 699 | R 40 000 | R 156 128 |
| 20% | R 6 314 | R 80 000 | R 168 397 |
| 30% | R 5 928 | R 120 000 | R 180 666 |
| 35% | R 5 736 | R 140 000 | R 186 801 |
Instalments include the monthly service fee. The initiation fee is added to the loan.
What the balloon really costs
A 30% balloon brings the instalment down from R 7 084 to R 5 928, saving R 1 155 a month. But you pay R 36 807 more in interest, because you're paying interest on the balloon amount for the full 72 months. And at the end you still owe R 120 000 in one lump sum.
What happens when the balloon falls due
You have three options:
- Pay it in cash, if you've saved for it.
- Refinance it with a new loan, which means more interest on a car that's now six years old.
- Trade the car in, hoping it's worth more than the balloon.
The risk is the third option. Cars lose value fastest in their first years, and if the car is worth less than the balloon, you'll need to cover the difference before you can sell it or trade it in.
A shorter term is the opposite trade-off
Paying the same car off over 60 months with no balloon costs R 8 058 a month, but total interest falls to R 118 151, compared with R 143 858 over 72 months.
The fees on every car loan
The National Credit Act caps what lenders may charge. On most car loans, the initiation fee is R 1 207,50 and the monthly service fee is R 69,00, both including VAT. Over 72 months, that's R 6 176 in fees on top of the interest.
Comprehensive insurance, which the bank requires, and any credit life cover are extra.
When a balloon can make sense
- You plan to trade the car in before the end and the balloon is modest.
- You're disciplined enough to save the monthly difference towards the balloon.
- You use the car for business and cash flow matters more than total cost.
If the only way to afford a car is with a large balloon, a cheaper car is usually the better choice.
