How take-home pay is calculated
Your employer works out PAYE by annualising your salary: it multiplies your monthly pay by 12, applies the SARS tax table, subtracts your age rebate and medical tax credits, then divides by 12.
Contributions to a pension, provident or retirement annuity fund reduce your taxable income, up to 27,5% of your income and no more than R 430 000 a year. That's why a retirement contribution costs you less than its face value.
UIF is 1% of your salary, up to a maximum of R 177,12 a month. Your employer pays the same again.
If you have more than one employer, a side income, or large medical expenses, your final tax on assessment can differ from PAYE.
