How take-home pay is calculated

Your employer works out PAYE by annualising your salary: it multiplies your monthly pay by 12, applies the SARS tax table, subtracts your age rebate and medical tax credits, then divides by 12.

Contributions to a pension, provident or retirement annuity fund reduce your taxable income, up to 27,5% of your income and no more than R 430 000 a year. That's why a retirement contribution costs you less than its face value.

UIF is 1% of your salary, up to a maximum of R 177,12 a month. Your employer pays the same again.

If you have more than one employer, a side income, or large medical expenses, your final tax on assessment can differ from PAYE.

Quick answers

How is PAYE calculated in South Africa?

Your employer multiplies your monthly salary by 12, applies the SARS tax table for the year, subtracts the rebate for your age (R 17 820 if you're under 65) and any medical tax credits, then divides by 12. On R 30 000 a month that comes to R 4 681,00 PAYE a month.

What is the tax-free threshold for 2026/27?

You pay no income tax on income up to R 99 000 a year if you're under 65, R 153 250 if you're 65 to 74, and R 171 300 if you're 75 or older.

How much UIF is deducted from my salary?

1% of your salary, up to R 177,12 a month (the ceiling is R 17 712 of salary). Your employer pays the same amount again.

Why is my bonus taxed so heavily?

A bonus is added to your income for the year and taxed at your highest (marginal) rate. On a R 30 000 salary, a R 30 000 13th cheque loses R 8 145 to tax, so you receive R 21 855.
